Perhaps it is a reaction to my childhood memories of long bleak English winters but I love tropical inspired décor schemes. No other décor theme comes close to invoking the same sense of easy, living and warm, sunny happy days. I am not talking about the “modern tropical” look that was so pervasive in the 90’s, think Bali inspired rooms all dressed in taupes and soft greys with natural textures with maybe a single tropical leaf in a clear glass vase.
No forget those Aman resort inspired interiors: that is so last century. What I am talking about are lush interiors teaming with rich tropical colours that resonate with drama and fun in equal measure. Think Hollywood regency glam like the Beverly Hills Hotel or Dorothy Draper’s Greenbrier Hotels both of which epitomized 1940’s American Glamour.
For me, this glamorous, tropical style has always been at the top of my preferred décor list and I am absolutely delighted that this style is officially back in vogue. Fabric and wallpaper houses are flush with lavish prints from palms leaves to pineapples and tropical birds galore. There is an abundance of choice and I am loving it!
Yes, there is definitely a hint of the Beverley Hills Hotel here.
I was definitely channeling Dorothy Draper when I designed this room.
