At the beginning of each new year, magazines and design blogs are awash with reviews and articles cataloguing the latest trends with lists of what’s hot and what’s not and what’s hip or what’s passé. This year is certainly no exception, celebrity designers are waxing lyrical, spewing forth their insights on the new must have look for 2017.
But there are just so many lists to choose from, and many of them are contradictory too. Are tropical prints in or are they out? Some say the recent penchant for brass is waning, others that it is firmly here to stay. Confused? I don’t blame you… What is a design lover to do? But despair not. The good news is that there is so much choice out there: there will be a current trend that is absolutely perfect for each design project. So embrace the variety of choices and find one that works for you.
The late, great, Gianni Versace once said,
“Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live.”
Not every trend, no matter how lauded it may be, will be right for you. Selecting the trend that works for your personal style and the way you live is key. In 2015, the colour experts at Pantone declared the colour of the year to be Marsala. This is a deep, intense tone and it brought a wonderful warmth and richness to homes in colder climates. But it just did not sit well in our tropical environment.
Last year’s Rose quartz and Serenity Blue were lighter and gentler and were far easier to integrate into Asian homes. We definitely had some fun with them last year.
But baby pastel tones are certainly not for everyone and we did not see these colours catching on in a big way. This year’s Pantone colour is Greenery, a fresh and zesty hue that resonates with life and energy and in this designer’s opinion, is a wonderfully calming foil for our hot and humid climate. Mix it with an abundance of neutrals and lashes of white to create interiors that ooze serenity.
Or pair it with equally vibrant contrasting hues to create rooms bursting with cheerful energy!
Or perhaps update last years soft pink sofa with a fabulous hit of zest.
Greenery is definitely one trend that I am looking forward to embracing in 2017. Personally, I am huge fan of the current trend for tropical prints- so this is a match made in design heaven.
But, if a touch of the verdant is not quite your thing, than there are so many other exciting trends out this year that can refresh your interiors and give it a whole new feel.
There is definitely a commonality amongst the multitude of new trends: a clear movement towards more layered designs, be it with colour, texture, pattern or details or indeed a combination of them all. The Zen, almost spartan interiors that have dominated since the 90’s are being replaced by interiors with far more life. I will readily confess to a penchant for colour and admit to enjoying a sprinkling of glamour, so personally, I am loving this ‘New Maximalism’. But this doesn’t mean that today’s interiors have to be glitzy or ornate. Of course, there is nothing wrong with a touch of glitz, if that is your thing. But those of us who yearn for tranquil environments have no shortage of new trends to choose from, too.
The current trend for ombre or painterly effects, when employed in subdued tones will be just as soothing, as anything that came out of the Zen trend and will bring your home right up to date.
So take the plunge, have some fun and decide on the trend that works for you and give your home a whole new look for 2017. Happy New Year!!
