- Our Ultimate Intervention

For many of our local colleges, the taught curriculum focuses on commercial and hospitality design. At Design Intervention, residential design is our passion. We feel that by crafting people’s homes, their personal spaces, we can have the most impact: we can literally improve lives.

THE COMPETITION BRIEF

  • The students can choose their own design theme and work on the attached floor plan (Inclusive of ceiling height information CH in mm.)
  • Important: Structural walls are marked in bold and they cannot be removed. Scale 1:100).
  • No budget limitations.
  • Thought should be given to the needs of a multi-generational family: storage for books, musical instruments, miscellaneous paraphernalia, and the physically impaired family member should be carefully considered.

The Homeowners Profile:

  • Husband, aged 43 is a businessman and often requires work from home. Hobbies: Playing golf.
  • Wife, aged 45 is a lawyer and has a large collection of books. Hobbies: Plays cello.
  • Son, aged 14 has allergies to dust mites. Hobbies: Videogames.
  • Daughter, aged 4 has a tomboy nature. Hobbies: Soccer is her favourite sport. She’s a big Liverpool fan.Son, aged 14 has allergies to dust mites. Hobbies: Videogames.
  • Grandmother, aged 94 is in a wheelchair.

The Premises:

The apartment is a 3000 sq. ft apartment located in downtown Singapore. It is an older development and the apartment had not been renovated since it was first built 40 years ago. The plumbing and electrics required a complete overhaul. There were a plethora of low hanging beams and pipes throughout the unit and the existing ceilings had been dropped to conceal them resulting in a dark and unappealing unit despite the abundance of space.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Written statement to explain the reasoning of chosen Design Theme of the entry (minimum 400 words).

  • Your supporting material should easily convey colour scheme, ambience, style directions, selection of materials and finishes.
  • Highlight any environmentally friendly solutions.
  • Is there a particular innovative aspect or challenge of the design that you would like the judges to pay special attention to?

Your entry should include the following for each room (A3 Landscape, JPEG file).

  • Floorplans
  • Sketches
  • Illustrations
  • Drawings should include details of customized design furniture.
  • Mood boards - Select materials and finishes that reflect and support the selected theme.

HOW THE WINNER IS SELECTED

Nikki and Andrea will assess the entries and determine a shortlist of 10 best entries. A copy of these 10 submissions is then distributed to the judging panel. The opinion of each judge is given equal weight. Each judge assesses each individual entry independently and without collaboration based on a points system. The scores for each entrant from all judges are then added together to give a total score from all judges. The winner is the entry with the highest total score.

Entries for Young Design Award Competition will be evaluated anonymously, impartially and ethically against the following criteria:
  • CLEAR EXPLANATION OF DESIGN CONCEPT
  • ORIGINALITY & INNOVATION
  • FUNCTIONALITY & PRACTICALITY
  • QUALITY OF VISUAL PRESENTATION
  • COLOUR PALETTE COMPLEXITY

THE GRAND PRIZE WINNER WILL BE AWARDED

  • $1,000 cash prize

  • YDA Plaque of Appreciation
